Senate Committee Recommend Controversial Court Merger Bill
Updated: May 26, 2022
A Senate committee has recommended a bill to effect the controversial merger of the specialist Family Court of Australia with the lower-level Federal Circuit Court should be passed despite opposition from Labor and the Greens.
On Friday, 20 November 2020 the Senate's Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee released its report on the bill to merge the two courts and recommended that it proceed. This goes against what most peak bodies in the family law sector have been advocating - that merging the Courts will mean that families and judges will suffer.
